The taipans are considered some of the deadliest known snakes. There are currently three recognised species, one of which, the coastal taipan, has two subspecies. Taipan is large, fast-moving, highly venomous, and endemic to Australasia. The powerful tail features large triangular scales known as ‘scutes’ along its length, which is almost half the total length of the animal. The nostrils and eyes sit at the top of the head and the fine sharp teeth are clearly visible even when the mouth is closed. Its colour ranges from grey to tan-brown, with dark patches along the sides and top of the body. The Freshwater Crocodile is slender-snouted and considerably smaller in build and overall size compared to its cousin, the Saltwater Crocodile. Unlike their much larger Australian relative, the saltwater crocodile, freshwater crocodiles are not known as man-eaters, although they will bite in self-defence and brief non-fatal attacks, apparently the result of mistaken identity, have occurred. It was hunted for its skin throughout its range up to the 1970s and is threatened by illegal killing and habitat loss.įreshwater Crocodile is a species of crocodile endemic to the northern regions of Australia. Australian saltwater crocodiles are the largest reptile in the world in terms of mass (can be over 1000kg), and the largest crocodile with a confirmed measurement and regarded as dangerous by people who share the same environment. Breeding says they don't need old hollow tress as they hollow out young trees, status says they need old hollow trees. contribs) 20:37, 10 July 2010 (UTC) Reply īreeding and status sections contradict each other. ![]() I suggest emending the caption accordingly. They are most likely to be a pair of siblings, still being fed by their parents. Given this they are unlikely to be a pair (as Gang-gangs, unlike other smaller parrots, only begin to breed after they have lost immature plumage). So they are most likely two immature birds. The female also a bit scruffy and young looking. Actually the bird on the left is an immature male (because it has the orange bars on the breast like the female). The caption on the main image says that it's a pair (male and female). Why the hell has someone from the Prime Minister's Cabinet of Australia been editing the page so it switches from "hollow tree trunk" to "closed tree trunk" 22 times?! 68.85.39.148 00:52, 25 August 2007 (UTC) 04:27, 10 July 2010 (UTC) Reply I always thought that the Gang-gang Cockatoo was shy, but also lacking fear of humans, and appeared very friendly, which is why so many of them got taken as pets, or killed by non-native animals. More outstanding tasks at the project's cleanup listing, Category:Birds articles needing attention, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds/Todo. Add taxonomic authorities to genus articles.
